As I’ve mentioned before, those five lovable guys have decided to open one of their hambuger stores within walking distance of my office. But apparently, their stores are so fancy, it requires 5 months to retrofit a sushi shop into a series of walls made of potato sacks.
Well, today was day one!
There are other burgers available within walking distance, but Five Guys fills a new niche (for me). It’s better than the burgers really close, and closer than the burgers that are crazy good. This makes them very likely candidates to trade me slow death for lunch money.
Since today is their first day open, I expected a crowd. And a crowd there was, on both sides of the counter. There were no less than 15 people crammed into the narrow aisle next to the grills.
Generally, it’s over priced, but that just helps them blend in with most of the other places around here. If you want to pay $12 for a small scoop of shepard’s pie that you serve yourself from a tin, I’ve got the place for you! Instead, $12 for a double bacon cheese burger (ALL THE WAY, with fries) is a much better proposition.
I’ll probably go back when I’ve got a hankerin’ for a burger, and the weather isn’t good enough to facilitate the 1 mile walk to the real king of burgers, a tiny convenience store in the rough part of town .

I know there are Five Guys haters here, but I’m a fan. I think that their beef just tastes fresh, and has a good beef flavor. The fries are good, and they give you so damned many of them that one order will easily feed two people. I think FG beats the snot out of In and Out. It’s also better than P. Terry’s here in Austin. A burger doesn’t need special sauce to be good. I’m also a fan of Mighty Fine. Good fries there, too.

So much damn food when I go there. Like, here’s a giant burger... and 5lbs of fries. I feel guilty throwing away half the fries, but it beats dying from eating them all.

Try the cajun seasoning on the fries next time. Brings them up another notch. Order on the side if your concerned about spiciness.

You know, you’ve made me realize, I can’t bring myself to eat a truly unhealthy workday lunch.
At my current job, and most of my previous jobs, I try to keep healthy sandwich fixings in the fridge and make healthy lunches. If I leave, it’s a quick drive to something boring and fuel rather than an experience.
At my last job where I worked among a bunch of outside sales people, we only had a little mini fridge on my floor, and the big fridge was in another department 4 floors down. So I didn’t keep lunch ingredients there. I tended to want to escape for longer lunches and I’d hit up this little slightly hood teriyaki joint, or an Indian buffet, and in both places I would have large piles of food with healthy pretensions. Like for example this mountain of chicken teriyaki with extra veggies and no rice.
But since I’m back somewhere with a normal sized fridge I’m back to my usual boring turkey sandwiches, carrots and hummus.

Agreed!
P Terry’s is good, but damn it does Five Guys kick butt.
I like my burgers to have that greasy, hot, juicyness in ‘em.
Some how, in ‘n Out looks the part, but doesn’t taste as good. And P Terry’s is a different cleaner (?) burger.

I’m really not into Five Guys. The burgers are ok enough but unspectacular and for the price it really should be spectacular. I didn’t like their fries at all.

Yes, I have access to only a mini fridge, not something you’d want to keep any deli items in for very long.
Besides, I have literally dozens of decent food places within walking distance (part of the main draw of the location as a whole). It’s tough to ignore the Sirens’ song.

I will. I didn’t take much time to ponder over the menu, and didn’t even see the option.

YES, DO THIS!! Also, never order anything other than a small order of fries. They fill the bag regardless.

Oh, there are always places to go that will be delicious.
But usually my thought process is:
Do I feel like wasting that much time?
Do I want to burn up gas when I don’t have to?
Do I want to spend more money than necessary?
Do I want more calories than I need?
Do I want to feel like I need a nap?
So the last place with the mini fridge, not much actual work to do, and ability to come and go as I please, I went out a lot more.
But my current job has sandwiches and other stuff in the vending area, and actual work for me to do so I mostly fall back on that if I’m not stocked up on groceries.
